Compounding

What is compounding?

Compounding is when the pharmacist mixes or combines ingredients to make a medication and it can be simple or complex.    All pharmacists can do simple compounding, but complex or speciality compounding requires additional training.

Why is compounding important?

Just as no two people are the same, their response to medication may not be the same either!  The ability to compound allows a medication to be specially prepared to meet a patient’s individual needs.

You may require this service when:

  • there are limited strengths of commercially available medication, and they don’t suit your needs
  • the medication is not available due to a manufacturer shortage or recall
  • you can’t tolerate the format, size or taste of your prescribed medication. Children, in particular, can be fussy, making it difficult for parents to administer the medication
  • you have an allergy to an ingredient in commercially produced medication

Services vary from store to store, so check your WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods location page to see if they offer a compounding service!
