Influenza Vaccination – It’s Not Too Late!

In Australia, it is recommended that any person 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccination to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza. Flu is more serious than a common cold with suffers often restricted to their bed for up to a week or more and unable to work or care for loved ones. WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods are offering flu vaccinations administered by one of our pharmacists or a visiting nurse practitioner. Book your flu vaccination at WholeLife today. Please note, minimum age restrictions as well as fees apply.

It’s never too late to get the flu vaccination. In recent years, the peak flu season has been between June and August. Although more prevalent in winter you can catch the flu all year round. Australian guidelines recommend that everyone over 6 months of age should receive the flu vaccination to protect themselves, but also to prevent passing on the flu to high risk groups, including those over 65 and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Influenza vaccination is not a vaccination against COVID-19, and it offers no protection against contracting COVID-19. However, catching the flu can lower your immunity and make you susceptible to catching other illnesses, including COVID-19, so influenza vaccinations are being recommended by governments and health providers to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Flu Vaccination Q&A

Q: Are you sure I’m not too late to get my flu vaccination?

A: It’s never too late! Although peak flu season is between June and August, it’s possible to catch the flu all year round. Everyone aged 6 months and over can get the flu vaccination.

Q: I heard the flu isn’t going around as much this year. Do I still need to get the flu vaccination?

A: There have been less flu cases this year, but it is definitely still around! Receiving the flu vaccination not only protects yourself and others around you from getting the flu, but also reduces your chances of being infected simultaneously with the flu and COVID-19.

Q: If I got a flu vaccination last year, do I need to get another one for this year?

A: Yes! There are new strains of the influenza virus each year. Ensure you’re protected against new strains by getting your flu vaccination every year.

Q: If I have had a COVID-19 vaccination can I still have a flu vaccination?

A: Yes! It is recommended that you wait 7 days between your flu vaccination and a COVID-19 vaccination. This is just a precautionary measure to manage the common side effects of both vaccinations. It’s ok to have your flu vaccination in between dose 1 and dose 2 of the COVID-19 vaccination.

Q: Won’t the COVID-19 vaccination prevent me from getting the flu?

A: No – the COVID-19 vaccination will only protect you against COVID-19. Although the flu and COVID-19 are both viral infections, they are not the same. This is why it’s important to get both vaccinations if eligible.
