It’s late at night, eyes are twitching from tiredness, your finger is reaching for the “next episode” button on Netflix, and you think to yourself, “one…more…episode.” We both know that it’s in fact not the last episode for tonight. So why are we rambling on about eyes twitching and Netflix? Well, because sometimes we don’t even realise how losing that extra hour of sleep can impact the rest of the day ahead of us.
Sleep is vital for our health and it’s all dependent on its timing, duration, and quality. Just like with diet and physical activity, sleep should also be viewed as critical to our health. It plays an imperative role in our performance memory consolidation, brain recuperation processes, learning and much more. Studies recommend that an adult needs approximately 7-8 hours per night of sleep and 9 hours is optimal.
There’s an array of factors which can influence the amount of sleep that we’re getting each night. These include lifestyle, work schedules (working long hours, irregular times), sleeping disorders and much more. Having less than 7 hours of sleep per night can impact our concentration, memory recall and performance with daily activities.
