Heartburn or Reflux

This service varies by state and territory.

Reflux, clinically referred to as GORD (Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease ), occurs when stomach acid or contents flow back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and discomfort.  While occasional reflux is common, GORD is a more persistent and severe condition that can lead to complications if left untreated, including damage to the lining of the oesophagus.

Please note that chest pain can be a symptom of a heart attack. Call triple zero (000) immediately if your chest pain is severe, radiating down your arm has lasted for 10 minutes or longer or is getting worse.

Our pharmacists can provide guidance on lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments, and weight management, and on helping you identify triggers. We can also recommend over-the-counter treatments like antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to manage symptoms and reduce stomach acid.

In Queensland, specially trained pharmacists are able to offer treatment for GORD to those aged 18-49 years under the Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice initiative.   Our WholeLife pharmacists will work with you to create a personalised plan, ensuring you receive the best treatment and support for managing your symptoms and improving your quality of life.
