Your Guide to Superfoods: What They Are and Why You Need Them
You’ve probably seen the word “superfood” on packaging, in health magazines and all over social media, but what does it actually mean?
Simply put, superfoods are foods that are exceptionally rich in nutrients. We’re talking vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other plant compounds that support your body from the inside out. Many of them have been used for thousands of years in traditional cultures around the world, it’s only recently that they’ve made their way onto our shelves here in Australia.
Whether you’re looking to support your energy levels, nourish your skin or simply add more goodness to your everyday diet, there’s a superfood that can help. Here are some of our favourites from Power Super Foods.
Superfruits: Acai & Goji
Not all berries are created equal. Acai, the deep purple berry native to the Amazon, is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet, with particularly high levels of anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for its rich colour and protective properties. It has a mild, slightly chocolatey flavour that works beautifully blended into smoothies, stirred through yoghurt or scattered over muesli.
Goji berries have been cultivated in China for over 6,000 years and are prized for their vitamin C content and natural carotenoids. They’re deliciously sweet-tart and easy to snack on, toss them through a trail mix, add them to a salad, or steep them in hot water for a nourishing herbal tea.
Chia Seeds
Originally from Mexico, chia seeds are one of the richest plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids around. They’re also high in a unique form of dietary fibre that causes them to swell and gel when mixed with liquid, which makes them incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Stir a tablespoon into porridge or sauces to thicken naturally, or combine with your milk of choice and leave overnight for an easy chia pudding. A little goes a long way.
Maca
Maca is a root vegetable from the highlands of Peru, related to broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables. It’s been used for centuries in its native region to support energy, vitality and hormonal balance. Research has investigated its potential benefits for libido, PMS and menopause symptoms, making it popular with those looking for a natural way to support hormone health. A teaspoon blended into your morning smoothie is one of the easiest ways to work it in.
Seaweed
Sea vegetables are some of the most mineral-dense foods you can eat, offering a natural source of iodine, iron, magnesium, calcium and chromium, minerals that are often lacking in modern diets. They’re also a good source of plant-based protein and fibre. Dulse is a great one to start with thanks to its mild, savoury flavour. Try adding a few flakes to soups, stir-fries or even a boiled egg for an easy nutrient boost.
Cacao
Raw cacao is chocolate in its most natural, unprocessed form, and it’s genuinely impressive from a nutritional standpoint. It’s rich in magnesium, protein and healthy fats, and is one of the highest plant-based sources of antioxidants available. It’s perfect for adding to smoothies, bliss balls and raw treats, or stirring through your morning coffee for a healthy mocha hit. The Incas valued cacao so highly they used it as currency, we think that says it all.
